All four production units are built with 21 m free-spanning, cross-laminated timber, creating flexible column free – space s. Along the color and wood factory, the sloping roofs are extended to form a pathway for visitors and staff to hike up and down the building while observing the production processes inside. Inside the factories, each wing has one alternating ceiling corner lifted to create inclined roofs that allow views into the production halls as well as the forest outside. Exploring The Plus feels like moving through an archipelago of colorful islands where the experience and overview of the factory’s activities are unified. Like a flowchart, the entire interior is organized with the color of each machine overflowing to the floors. The layout enables an efficient, flexible, and transparent workflow between the manufacturing units and an intuitive visitor experience. Virginia Heffernan is a regular contributor to Wired, the author of “Magic and Loss: The Internet as Art” and a podcast host. The Plus is conceived as a radial array of four main production halls – a warehouse, color factory, wood factory, and the assembly – that connect at the center and generate the ‘plus’ shape at its intersection. All of a sudden, you find yourself a little bit sad and you don’t know why.” “It’s like when the tree on the corner goes down in the neighborhood. “It has so much to do with familiarity,” Grasser said. I asked him why he thinks people are so moved by the bird’s retirement. To me, the negativity of the new brand exactly models the kind of spiteful interaction - bereft of humor, edged with despair - that good design should endeavor to discourage in social media.Įver since Grasser, who co-founded the branding company Studio Mococo in 2016, posted about how he designed the bird, he’s been barraged with expressions of grief for the hopeful spirit his logo represented. “The letter X is a negation,” Bierut told me. ‘Like an alien’s version of comedy.’ ‘The sense of humor of a horny dentist.’ Nikki Glaser, Hari Kondabolu and other comedians on Elon Musk’s desperate quest to be funny. Technology and the Internet Elon Musk is dying to be funny. So while the new name and logo may be true to the rapacious and even inhumane plans Musk has for his company, the X has also sterilized the project. Rather than attracting our eyeballs, the oligarchs seem to want to poke them out. Today a pantheon of overmen have consolidated an oligopoly and deliberately styled it as authoritarian. It’s a reminder of the 1990s promise of the internet - that so much hypertext would lead to serendipitous connections, meaningful collaborations and whole new fields of human endeavor.īut the ideals of collaboration and co-invention - sharing and caring - deserted Big Tech some time ago. Jack Dorsey, Twitter co-founder, recently xeeted a goat emoji at Grasser, whose thread about designing the bird logo went viral this week. “If you just draw two lines that cross each other it can feel unbalanced.” “The optical correction that occurs at the center of an X - there are subtle shifts you need to make it feel balanced,” he said. But a quieter corner of the virtual commons? I’m in. When it comes to Zuckerberg versus Musk, I hope they both lose. Opinion Opinion: How I looked past Twitter and learned to like social media again Perhaps that’s why it looks a bit teetery to my eye, like a folding chair that’s about to collapse. The designer Michael Bierut told me that, while most Xs are drawn to be slightly thicker at the bottom than the top, to give a sense of solidity, the current Twitter X is not made this way. The current X logo is derived from an existing character set. The name X and a severe, black logo are more apt for whatever baffling and galactic storm-trooping Musk wants to do with his interplanetary empire. Elon Musk’s company, after all, is clearly not cute or optimistic or uptilted. On Sunday Grasser tweeted - he xeeted? - that it was meant to be “legible at very small sizes, almost like a lowercase ‘e.’īut to Grasser, a typeface obsessive, his bird is not the right logo for the new company. When Twitter changed hands Thursday, the question before a swath of its 400 million users was: Should I stay or should I go?īy contrast, the bird he created with fellow designers Angy Chu and Todd Waterbury was made from circles, balanced, round-bellied and uptilted. Opinion Op-Ed: To tweet or not to tweet, now that Elon’s the boss

That’s when things got really hard to manage and I knew I needed to find a new routine that helped me to get my housework done without spending my whole day cleaning. And as a mom of three little girls, I was easily able to keep my whole house nice and tidy practically all the time.īut, in 2017, we welcomed twin boys into our family and started building our forever home. I’ve always been a “neat freak” ever since I was a kid. Here’s a bit of a backstory behind this housework routine and chore checklist. One memorable scene is when Lara must swim down a river with her hands bound in order to evade capture. While the movie certainly has its faults, the action sequences and fight choreography are athletically impressive. The failure to establish a meaningful plot hurts every scene in the movie, as it’s never clear why the villains act as they do. It’s also left ambiguous what anyone could possibly gain from releasing a spirit powerful enough to threaten the entire world. Vogel’s constant bickering leaves the viewer wondering why he hasn’t left the island already and found work elsewhere. No character has strong motivation to search for Him i ko’s lost tomb, and nobody understands the legend. He lacks the charisma to be a memorable antagonist, and by the end of the movie, he hasn’t done anything noteworthy. Vogel is involved in a few action-packed moments but is only ever threatening because he carries a gun. He frequently complains and wishes that he were back home with his family and is rarely menacing or intimidating. Vogel is only on the island because he is being paid and has no motivation for searching for Himiko’s tomb. Goggins does his best with the character, but Vogel is as bland a villain as can be. Eventually, the pair makes it to the island where they are greeted by Mathias Vogel (Walton Goggins), a rival archeologist-turned-mercenary who is also searching for the tomb for unknown reasons. A fter discovering that both of their fathers went missing on the same expedition, Lu decides to help Lara search for Himiko. Lara meets up with drunken boat captain Lu Ren (Daniel Wu). Don’t expect the legend of Himiko to be elaborated on any further though, because even within the movie, nobody really understands what will happen if she is released from her tomb, or if the legend is even real. Lara decides to pursue Himiko in hope that she will find out her father’s fate. Richard Croft had been searching for the tomb of Himiko, a Japanese goddess of death who apparently would pose a great threat to humanity if she w as ever released. The plot sacrifices logic for convenience because if Lara were living a life of luxury with her father’s money, she would be harder for audiences to relate to. After discovering clues related to her father’s disappearance in his old research notes, Lara travels to Hong Kong to investigate further. Doing so would acknowledge his death, but Lara believes he is still alive. Her father Richard Croft (Dominic West) was a globe-trave l ing zillionaire before he went missing seven years prior to the start of the movie, but Lara refuses to inherit his fortune. Unfortunately, she is stuck in a mediocre action movie that uses every cliched Hollywood trope in the book.Īt the start of the movie, Lara lives a meager lifestyle in London. This version of Lara is vulnerable and relatable, a far cry from the Lara in the 2001 Angelina Jolie movie, and it’s part of what makes her endearing. After being placed in a chokehold, she doesn’t make some dazzling comeback or use a secret move to win - she taps out after she is almost choked unconscious. During the first scene of “Tomb Raider,” Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) spars with a more athletic opponent in an MMA-style gym. Having a good escape plan is important in any encounter when it goes south.ĭivine strike could be better but hey, it's free damage. It's free advantage or free mele without having to mele.Ĭloak of Shadows is kind of bad but decent as an, "in a pinch", escape mechanism. Your party rogue may love you for it.ĭuplicity is pretty nice, especially for delivering touch spells. Is there something I'm missing here? Or any house rules groups have implemented to deal with the domain's flaws?ĮDIT: I posted a homebrew revision of the domain in the homebrew forum if anyone was interested.īlessing of the Trickster is simply a decent buff. So yeah, despite easily being my favorite domain thematically, Trickery is just… terrible. The only Illusion abilities they get are Mirror Image and their Invoke Duplicity, which would sting less if Clerics didn't only have ONE Illusion spell otherwise (silence). The only benefits they get for mind-manipulation, deceptions, and the social pillar of gameplay in general are some Domain spells (Charm Person / Modify Memory). Despite all this however, my biggest issue is that it fails to deliver on the theming: Many of their features only offer bonus to stealth such as Blessing of the Trickster and Cloak of Shadows. Some of their features are purely about team support like Blessing of the Trickster, but your Invoke Duplicity offers less utility to your allies than a Familiar, even after you can create 4 of them at once. The design is just all over the place: they are a "melee" cleric domain with no melee proficiencies. They get Divine Strike (for POISON, no less) but again don’t get either Martial Weapon or Heavy Armor proficiencies, like every other Domain that gets this melee class feature.Invisibility for ONE turn for the cost of an action! Make this a bonus action you can use up to WIS modifier times per day or something, don’t make it compete with Invoke Duplicity Their Channel Divinity: Cloak of Shadows is insultingly bad.Regarding the "unlisted' uses of Invoke Duplicity (confusing enemies, absorbing attacks, etc.), this is extremely DM dependant given how little info the feature gives you.So that doesn't grant advantage to any spell with an attack roll besides Inflict Wounds, but it must be intended for melee, right? Wait, never mind, Trickery doesn’t get Martial Weapons or Heavy Armor proficiencies. Speaking of granting advantage, Invoke Duplicity also grants advantage to the cleric, and ONLY the Cleric when BOTH they and the illusion are within 5 feet of a target.Oh, and again, it COSTS YOUR CONCENTRATION. Oh, and it can't perform the Help action in combat to grant allies advantage. Then again, this isn't much more utility than a basic familiar, except its slow and requires the caster's bonus actions to move. At the cost of your concentration, Invoke Duplicity lets you cast spells from a different point, mostly notable for casting Touch Spells safely, which can admittedly be useful (Bestow Curse, Inflict Wounds, Cure Wounds, etc). Now lets talk about Channel Divinity: Invoke Duplicity. They don't even get a flavorful ribbon feature. Illusion!?!), and no bonus skill proficiencies (a choice of Deception, Sleight of Hand, or Stealth wouldn’t have gone amiss). They get no weapon or armor proficiencies, no cantrips (Where. At level 1, all the Trickery cleric gets is Blessing of the Trickster, which isn’t bad but is definitely extremely little compared to other domains. However, the Domain itself is possibly one of the worst designed subclasses in the game, and just fails on both a thematic and mechanical level in my opinion. I love the theming of the Trickery Domain for clerics, as a lot of my characters are impish pranksters, shameless charlatans, and secretive spies and agents. We evaluate the performance of Stockfish 14 and Leela Chess Zero (LCZero) on Plaskett’s Puzzle. The advent of powerful computer chess engines enables us to revisit chess studies where the highest level of tactics and accuracy are required. Though the puzzle was initially created by a Dutch composer, it achieved notoriety in 1987 when English grandmaster Jim Plaskett posed the problem at a chess tournament, stumping all players except Mikhail Tal. There are many features of Plaskett’s Puzzle that make it particularly hard-not just the depth required (15 moves) but also the use of underpromotion (a particularly counterintuitive kind of move in chess) and subtle tactical strategies. The endgame is the final phase of a chess game. We choose to analyse how chess engines respond to Plaskett’s Puzzle, one of the most well-known endgame studies in history. As such, they provide a good benchmark for AI studies. They are a notoriously difficult kind of puzzle, involving detailed calculations and tactical motifs. Chess studies originally became popular in the 19th century. There are various schools of thought in chess composition, each of which placing different emphasis on the complexity of problems. You may not be able to work out the answers, but in theory, there must be a solution, a right procedure in any position-John von Neumann Chess is a well-defined form of computation. To conclude, we discuss the implications of our work on artificial intelligence (AI) and artificial general intelligence (AGI), suggesting possible avenues for future research.Ĭhess is not a game. On the theoretical side, we describe how Bellman’s equation may be applied to optimize the probability of winning. Drawing inspiration from how humans solve chess problems, we ask whether machines can possess a form of imagination. We examine the algorithmic differences between the engines and use our observations as a basis for carefully interpreting the test results. Our experiments show that Stockfish outperforms LCZero on the puzzle. We use Plaskett’s Puzzle, a famous endgame study from the late 1970s, to compare the two engines. Two of the leading chess engines, Stockfish and Leela Chess Zero (LCZero), employ significantly different methods during play. We find that they can serve as a tool for testing machine ability as well. Endgame studies have long served as a tool for testing human creativity and intelligence. Bar sheets show the relationship between the on-screen action, the dialogue, and the actual musical notation used in the score. If a film relies heavily on music, a bar sheet may be prepared in addition to or instead of an X-sheet. He creates what’s called an exposure sheet, which is a printed table that breaks down the action, dialogue, and sound frame-by-frame as a guide for the animators. Meanwhile, the background and color stylists and art directors will do similar work to setup the locations, determine the art style and color schemes to be used in the project.Īt the same time, the timing director, who is usually the main director, takes the final animatic and analyzes what poses, drawings, and lip movements will be needed on what frames. That’s when macquettes are produced, they are small statues that depict a character in the 3D space. It’s necessary sometimes to see how certain characters look like in three dimensions to get a better understanding of a character’s design. These model sheets show the designers how every character or object looks from different angles with a variety of poses and expressions, so that all artists working on the project can deliver the same output. When the animators and the directors decide on a certain animatic, they send it along with the approved storyboards to the design department, so character designers can prepare model sheets for different characters and objects in the animation. This could prevent animating scenes that could be edited out of the film, avoiding a potential loss in time and money. This process could result in creating new versions of either the storyboard or the soundtrack, or both, and creating a new animatic for review until everything is perfected to the desired extent. This stage helps animators and directors to identify any script or timing issues that could exist with the produced storyboard and fix them as needed. An animatic is usually a sequence of images or sketches, in the form of a storyboard, arranged with a soundtrack, and produced right before the full animation begins. The scratch track used during animation, however, normally contains just the voices, the vocal songs to which characters sing along, and some temporary musical score tracks, with the final score and sound effects added during post-production.Īfter the soundtrack is created, an animatic or a story reel is made to determine the overall effectiveness of the animation before finalizing things. This is due to the slow systematic way in which traditional animation is produced, so it’s almost always easier to synchronize the animation to an existing soundtrack, than it is to synchronize a soundtrack to an existing animation.Ī full soundtrack will contain music, sound effects, and dialogue performed by voice actors. Voice recordingĪ preparatory soundtrack is often recorded before true animation begins, so that the animation can more accurately synchronized to the soundtrack. It helps the animators to set plans for the animation plot and defines the composition of the imagery. This process is often repeated many times before reaching the final desired outcome. The drawings are displayed in a certain sequence, so the viewer can pre-visualize the animation. A storyboard is a collection of hand drawings and words that tell a story, similar to large comic strips. The storyboarding process was originally developed at Walt Disney Productions in the early 1930s, and it’s usually the first step in making traditional animation. Traditional animation process Storyboards The traditional process used to be expensive and time consuming, requiring lots of money to be spent on materials and human labor depending on how many cells and backgrounds need to be created. Followed by digitally colorizing these drawings and also simulating camera work, then finally processing the output to allow the film to be exported in different formats, like the old 35mm film or digital video.Ĭomputers have also lowered the costs of the animation process by eliminating the need for materials like acetate sheets and inks. Special computer software has made it possible for drawings to be directly drawn or scanned into the computer system. This allows the animator to reuse the drawings without having to fully re-draw components for each frame.Ĭomputers now facilitate this animation process, making the traditional cel drawing process nearly obsolete by the beginning of the 21st century. The animator draws some frames on cellulose sheets designed for drawing, then these cels are laid over other ones to be photographed. This saves your phone battery because you aren’t relying on Viber on your phone, nor are you using up battery keeping your phone connected to the computer. In fact, if you forgot your phone at home, and you have Viber for Desktop installed on your computer it will make sure you never miss a chat or call all day long. Whereas some apps need your phone to be on, and have access to the internet, and remain close to your computer to receive calls and messages, Viber doesn’t. When you need to leave your computer, and someone else may use it when you are away, simply lock Viber so that your messages and notifications are hidden from view until you come back and unlock it. To help you keep your chats private, we introduce Viber-screen lock. We know some of you use Viber for Desktop on a shared computer. Viber for Desktop was created as a standalone app, rather than a web application like other messaging apps, because it allows us to ensure tight privacy and security for the messages you send and calls you make from your computer. Just like with Viber on your mobile phone, messages sent to or from Viber for Desktop are end-to-end encrypted by default, which means that only you and the person you are chatting with have the (automatic) keys needed to decrypt and understand the message. To get you started, check out these great hacks. There’s lots more you can do with Viber for Desktop. Make and receive calls, including Viber Out calls, directly from your computer, and if you want to change how you are chatting, you can transfer your call from your phone to your computer (or from your computer to your phone) without interrupting the flow. For example, you are both going over a document, share your screen so that you can be sure you are talking about the same thing. That’s where Viber for Desktop really shines – you have your keyboard, mouse and big screen all there to make this chat easier, and therefore more fun.Ĭalling on a big screen has even more advantages – when you are on a call with someone and you want them to see what is on your screen, share your screen. Sometimes it is just that much easier to use a big screen and proper keyboard to read and type your messages. Once you set up Viber for Desktop, you connect your phone in order to sync all your previous messages and contacts, so that you can carry on chatting from exactly the same place you left off. It’s always syncedĪll messages that you send and receive on Viber – whether you are on your computer or mobile phone – are continuously synced, so you will never miss a message, or have gaps in your chat. Read our top 5 reasons why you should get Viber for Desktop on your computer right now: 1. Viber for Desktop is just for that – an easy way to keep on chatting and stay connected throughout the day, without having to look away from your computer. We want to be able to do everything we usually do on our phones on our computer, without the need to check our phones every few minutes. In today’s world, even though we are on our phones all the time, many of us spend hours every day on a computer be it at work, school, or home. But your hands, which naturally move and wave as you stride down the street, also are an excellent place to boost your visibility and catch a texting driver’s eye. That means more reflective detailing on tights, shoes, and outer layers, of course. In response, running wear companies have stepped up their efforts to help runners be seen. Just as smartphones have created a demand for touchscreen-compatible gloves, so too have they contributed to the ever-growing problem of distracted driving. There are even solar-powered gloves that promise to harness the power of the sun to keep frozen fingers at bay. Though cozy, natural fabrics like wool will still protect your hands against winter’s bite, in some cases manufacturers have improved a bit on Mother Nature by adding high-tech fabrics to keep the elements out and warmth in. You can expect to pay a higher price for that extra engineering, though we’ve done our best to dig up the best values. Most gloves today incorporate some level of compatibility with touchscreens, but some are definitely better than others. But, that’s not 2022, when our gloves are loaded with technical performance fabrics that can wick sweat and regulate temperature without compromising breathability, tactile ability, and other functions.įrom smartphones to GPS watches, most of our favorite running gadgets either have touchscreens that are inactive under gloves or tiny buttons that fabric-covered fingertips fumble over. There was a time when runners wore nothing more than the brown cotton gloves you’d find at a hardware store. In addition, we have replaced any pairs that are out of stock or no longer available. Editor’s Note: We reviewed these glove selections on Septemand updated our recommendations to reflect our most recent round of testing. |
